These words have been rattling around in my brain since they were spoken to me earlier today.
I must say, that I disagree... and here's why.
Chances are if your entire day has gone badly it is because
you have declared it to be so.
Yup more of this mumbo jumbo because guess what.. it's true.
There can be undesirable events throughout the day but to declare the whole day as a "bad day" is a bit close minded in my opinion.
Yes there are extreme circumstances and I'm not ignoring that.
Everyone has days they remember that ... "changed them"
A learning experience.
Chances are there is also somewhat of an underlying text.. if you will..
something was also gained from the experience.
Now. Back to the general, everyday discussion.
Chances are you're not having a severe emergency every. single. day.
If you are... you definitely shouldn't be reading this post.. you should be out doing something to fix that. Our realities are mostly in our control.
However.. you had something to be late for... and in the grand scheme of things one day late to work probably isn't going to get you fired. If it does, chances are you already had it coming. We are human. We use technology. Both are imperfect. Therefore we have to expect imperfect things to happen.
More importantly than the imperfect thing happening is your attitude towards the imperfect event.
Even if you woke up late that doesn't mean it has to derail your entire day.
What. a. waste.
Don't allow your entire day to be ruined upon waking up!!!
Decide that it was a small setback.
Take responsibility for the fault and lace the boots up and move forward.
This is the first step to self control.
Literally being in control of your emotions and how you feel. Refusing to allow little things in your reality to ruin your day. Allowing your happiness to be conditional is a fatal mistake. Happiness is a state of being it's not an event or a time or a place..
Things and people and places can attribute to your state of happiness.. as they should! You should be surrounding yourself with events and people and places that promote your happiness!!
So what are some things you can do to create happiness even when things are going awry?
Just stop. Seriously. Stop. Slow down. You're late already (at least in this metaphor) and I guarantee you that rushing will not change that. It will, however, cause you to forget things that you may need throughout your day. It will cause you feelings of stress and anxiety. Feelings of regret. I should have... blah blah blah.. instead find a way to keep the negative event from happening again. Think about what you can CHANGE to create successful mornings. I have tons of posts on that! Click right here to find some ways to have happier mornings!!
Once you have paused you should take a deep breath. This will help you refocus your energy on the rest of your day. Zoom out a bit.. find some perspective. Take a breath and set your intentions for the rest of your day. We can't control everything but we CAN control ourselves. Allow the clock to defeat you or suck it up and accept that you WILL be late for work.. however.. you will get there.. work will get done and the day will continue... the day will also eventually end and you'll get another opportunity to do it better tomorrow. All is temporary. Focus on the solution.
3. FIND THINGS TO BE THANKFUL FOR. EXPRESS GRATITUDE. FOCUS ON THE GOOD.
Yup at first it is going to be as hard as it sounds, but the more you do it the easier it becomes and the things that seem like big disasters become small setbacks. This is the most important. If you can't find things to be thankful for then you should definitely address that. Gratitude is everything and being able to focus on the good all around you. More often than not, we have created all the negative around us and we're so busy complaining and focusing on our problems and belly aching that we're missing everything. Each and every day creates your past... your present is creating your past and your future simultaneously... If your day to day "sucks" then by proxy your past and your future both "suck." WHOA... I thought this was the positive article?? Yup. I'm telling you how to make the change you need to have a happy future.
In the wake of the metaphor we are rolling with.. you woke up late.
Do you still have food to eat? Water/coffee/tea/morning beverage to drink? A car to drive? No flat tires? Clean clothes to wear? I assume you woke up in a nice warm bed as well... and have running water? Yeah this is all trivial but it's the truth. We tend to forget how truly spoiled we are. There are lots and lots and lots of humans who have it wayyyy harder on a "day to day" basis. We have got to stop this ungrateful behavior. Yes. Comparisson is the fastest way to unhappiness I'm not saying compare yourself. I'm saying look around at everything you have. Look around. I bet there are many things that could cause your "day to day" to be much much much worse. Going two weeks without my dishwasher helped that perspective for me. These little things happen and we should remember how wonderful it is to have such things.
I mean what did they do before they had alarm clocks?? Yeah there's Google but not now.. I'll get lost and never finish my thoughts haha. Seriously though.
4. LAUGH AND PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE.
Life is too short. Do what you need to do to accept the situation. Cry it out. Throw your 3 year old fit. Then laugh it off and put a smile on your face. It's absolutely free and it will make you feel better. Turn some tunes on and let it go. Stress is literally one of the most detrimental things to our health and well being. Even though we hear this frequently we tend to ignore it. At least from what I've seen in society as a whole.
5. CELEBRATE EVERYDAY. #CelebrateToday
When I first started my journey I decided I needed to find a way to find something good in every single day. To find a reason to celebrate.. even if it's just a Tuesday in pick a month... whatever.. so I found a collection of all the little funny and weird holidays.. like Cheeseburger Day or Doughnut Day... it's small but it's something! It's also surprising how excited you can get over a National "pick a food/activity" Day. The one that I use is located RIGHT HERE at Days of the Year. No I'm not being paid by them or any of that it's just the way that I found to celebrate something every single day... it also helps that I'm a stay at home mom/housewife/homemaker because my family digs this kinda thing anyway ;)
Maybe this isn't your thing but that doesn't mean you can find what your thing is.. maybe there's a website with a song everyday that would perk some happiness.. or downloading a daily positive quote app.. or whatever. Find a way. Find a way to insert some happiness into your daily routine. I also went through my Facebook page ( and I still do) and deleted or hid any constant negative activity and I subscribed to lots of positive things. Daily affirmations. Daily Motivation. There are lots of Gratitude pages and Happiness pages and Positivity pages.. if you're on social media you can find the positive.. the negative is noisy and it pops up ever so often but all you gotta do is click the "unfollow" button and it can't harm you any longer. If you're in a state of general downness you have to make a change. It's your job. Your life.
Everyday is a good day.
Pause. Breathe. Focus. Laugh. Smile. Celebrate.
